Walk among giant sequoias without the hustle and bustle of the park groves just a few miles from Tenaya Lodge.
The Nelder Grove offers the chance to see giant sequoias without the crowds, but it doesn’t disappoint with the trees. The massive Bull Buck Tree, at 246 feet tall and 100 feet in circumference, is one of the most-accessible large sequoias anywhere. The Big Ed tree is almost as big and is a short walk of less than a couple hundred yards. The short Shadow of the Giants Trail has about a dozen mature giant sequoias right on the trail and highlighted by dogwood blossoms in the spring.
The Nelder Grove is also rich in history. The grove was partially logged and remnants of the logging works as well as the mute stumps of giants are visible throughout the area. Many artifacts have interpretive signs explaining the history.

The grove's amenities are rustic and road access is seasonal and not conducive for all vehicle types. Before heading to Nelder Grove, be sure to inquire on road conditions and access during the winter and early spring months.
